“This Will Pass” and Other Advice for New Moms

by Amy on August 31, 2010

Have you ever taken a moment to think about all of the new skills you’ve learned since becoming a mother? Every once in awhile I realize how much knowledge I’ve acquired over the last eighteen or so months since I became pregnant with Nate.

Back then, before I saw the little blue plus sign on that pregnancy test indicating that a baby was on the way, I knew very little about pregnancy, birth and babies. And while I’m still learning new things every day, I’ve come a long way since then. If I could somehow get in touch with myself before I had Nate, there are a few things I would tell myself. They’re lessons that have been hard to learn, that I still have to remind myself about on a daily basis, in fact.

One day when I was having a particularly rough time as a brand new mom, and my step-mom Heather gave me a piece of advice, and it was this: When you’re in the middle of a really rough moment, when things seem really hard, just tell yourself, this will pass. It was one of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever received, and it got me through those early months when being a mother was so intensely bewildering at every turn. Being a mother is still bewildering and frustrating at times, but not nearly as constantly as I found it to be in the early, early days (and early, early hours of the day).

I was so pleased to be part of a recent project, Reflections of Motherhood, a collaborative effort put together by Alison Kramer of Nummies Bras. I hope you’ll take a moment to watch this video, especially if you’re a brand new mom, or about to become one, because there’s excellent advice in there. I plan to watch it occasionally just to remind myself how amazing this journey is.

Your sweet face made it even better.
Because I trust you.
(And the girl who said Google doesn’t have kids.)

Am crying. I needed to hear so many of those when Eric was younger. I still need to hear some of them.

Probably also crying because I am pregnant, and emotional, but still. It is a beautiful video, thank you for posting it!

I can’t get the video to come up, but that’s probably my computer. i’ll try it again later. That statement is so true though. The crying passes, the sleepless nights pass, the meals that make a huge mess and take forever to get through pass and so much more. It sometimes feels like you’ll be in a stage forever, but then it’s gone by and you start to forget. I think that’s the only way people have more than one baby! They forget the bad stuff! lol :o )
