New York City Sandwiches

New York City Sandwiches

by Amy on August 11, 2010

It occurred to me upon returning home from New York City that I didn’t really have much in the way of sit-down meals. Laurin, George and I had breakfast at the counter of Astro, a diner up a block from the Hilton on Friday morning. It was good…the same sort of breakfast special that Graham and I have on a regular basis locally for about five bucks, except in New York City it was eleven bucks.

There’s always a line-up for a good deli sandwich.

Other than that, only two other dining experiences over that weekend really leap to mind. The first was lunch at the Carnegie Deli. Laurin and I were shopping at Zabar’s when we got a call from Maria, who was letting us know that some of the Aiming Low people were heading to the Carnegie Deli for lunch. I texted Angie and asked her to save Laurin and I seats while we hopped on the subway and headed over to meet them.

It was the first of two lunch stops Angie went ahead and got a table. We arrived at the Carnegie Deli and bypassed the line, meeting our friends at the back. Laurin and I shared a corned beef sandwich on rye, priced at $15.95. Then we paid an extra $3 for the privilege of sharing! Ah, New York.

At least there were pickles involved.

The food was good, but I would venture to say that the food at Teddy’s Restaurant, the deli we go to near home is as good, if not better, at about a third of the cost.

My half of our sandwich. Laurin demolished her half in four seconds flat, and had to take a picture of mine to send home.

On Saturday afternoon Angie again went ahead and got a table at Serendipity3, where she’d made reservations months ago. I had the Haight-Ashbury sandwich. It was DELICIOUS.

“Sliced turkey, tomato, avocado and alfalfa sprouts with melted muenster on raisin pumpernickel with Russian dressing, $14.”

The next time I go to New York, I am going to make a point of having a sit down dinner at a restaurant, preferably in Little Italy. I like sandwiches, but I’m really craving some Chicken Parmesan.

Try Carmine’s in midtown. They have great family style Italian food.

I am quite sad I didn’t get a nice, sit down dinner in NY, but I had a great time with you at Astro’s (world’s most expensive “yogurt experience”), and at the Carnegie Deli. Skipping the line was fun! I’m already planning a trip back!
