All Through the Night

All Through the Night

by Amy on August 9, 2010

On Saturday morning I spoke to Graham on the telephone from our room in New York. He sounded so upbeat and positive, I was really proud of him for being such a good dad. I could hear Nathan babbling in the background, and could picture him making his way around the kitchen and dining room in his own clumsy way that is part crawling, part creeping, part clawing.

“So Nate slept the whole night last night,” Graham told me.

“Really?” I replied. “That’s great!”

“And he did the same for your dad and Heather,” he went on.

“Yeah?”

“And for my mum, too.”

My jaw hit the floor.

Apparently all that was required to make Nate sleep through the night was for me to leave the country.

As inevitably happens when others care for your child, Nate’s regular routine got thrown a bit out of whack while I was away attending the BlogHer conference. It seems that everyone ended up putting Nate to bed a little late while I was gone, around nine o’clock, and for some reason he slept through until around six o’clock. He has done this on the odd occasion, but certainly not with any sort of regularity. Wow.

It’s been five nights in a row that he’s been sleeping through the night. I thought for sure that the minute I walked in the door yesterday, his baby spidey senses would begin to tingle, and all bets would be off, and I would be up in the middle of the night entertaining him. I was mistaken. I put him to bed at 8:30 last night and he slept until almost 6:30 this morning.

Yet another reason for me to love New York City.

(Something else changed while I was gone…Nate won’t tolerate a soother in his mouth. At all. He’d much rather chew or suck on his blankie to self-soothe. Maybe the two are related? Or maybe he just outgrew the soother. Either way, another challenge to overcome! Wheeee!)

Thanks Maria! The weird thing is, I feel all this pressure to make sure it keeps happening. Like, now that I’m home, if he doesn’t continue, it’ll be my fault. Ack!

Don’t leave the country again! When you come back he’ll be dating!

That’s awesome! You’ll probably get more rest now than you did AT BlogHer. LOL!

That is such great news. Altho I am sure that you are still waking up because your body is used to him doing it. Or was that just me when my kid actually started sleeping through the night. (You know 15 years ago, not recently because that would make it really odd that I still get up with my 15 year old)

Also, loved having dinner with you on Friday night just walking back to the hotel. It was so great to get to know you better.

You’re so right, I have to sleep train MYSELF.

I really enjoyed spending time with you, too! You are as awesome as everyone says you are. :)
